Mercury Retrograde, Cats & Books

image

Having trouble communicating?

Is your phone on the blink?

Is your internet connection unreliable and slow, even if you’re not on the NBN?

At the Cat  Politics domicile our landline phone hasn’t worked for several days due to faulty wiring either on the property or outside in the street.  This in turn has affected our internet access, which goes off when the phone - which we can’t answer - rings.

Wouldn’t you know it - Mercury has been retrograde since 3 December and won’t be direct again until 23 December, just in time for Christmas.

As the phone connection is through my ISP we can’t just ring Telstra and complain, but need to have the internal wiring checked out by an electrician before contacting IINET.  An electrician is coming sometime next week, so hopefully the fault will be resolved soon.

This time last year we had a very sick cat, the still lamented Willy the Tonkinese, who died in the early hours of Boxing Day.

We’re not spared this year, with Talya having a problem with her gut,  though it is not life threatening. She appears quite healthy and has not lost her appetite.

For several months she has been shitting inappropriately on various rugs in the night or early morning, not all the time, but enough to cause concern.  Of course it could be an expression of displeasure at the relocation, but as the evacuation was diarrhoetic, with evidence of blood and mucous, we took her to the vet to have her checked out the other day.  We’d previously taken her to the Ivanhoe Vet, but weren’t that happy with the vet we saw, so took her to the East Ivanhoe Vet this time – an older guy who seemed to know his stuff.

He prescribed an antibiotic and advised us to not feed her for 24 hours, then feed her small amounts of food for several days.

talya_nov17
Talya lounging on the outdoor table

She was puzzled and stressed by the enforced fast the first night and took it apon herself to hunt her own dinner, catching a small rat, which was promptly stolen by Bingo who played it to death.  The next night she got another rat and probably ate it.

Anyway, the antibiotics appear to be working as she hasn’t shat inside since the visit to the second vet. She has always been an anxious cat, which in fact probably has affected her guts.

We have a cat door installed, so the cats have access to the outdoors all the time, though they both spend most of the day and night indoors. So Talya can get out if she wants.

Bingo, unlike Willy, is not a wanderer and, with no other cats in the vicinity, feels no need to defend his territory.

bingo_sink
Feline ornament on window sill above the sink

It is impossible for us to place ornaments on shelves due to the wickedness of Bingo the cat, he’d knock them off and smash them in the blink of an eye, but he does look handsome being ornamental himself.

He’s not wicked all the time, in fact he’s sweet and smoochy often and adores attention and pats. And he’s a smart cat, picking out his particular toy unerringly from a cluttered drawer. He still retrieves too, and is quite insistent that you play along with him.

As for the 19 boxes of books I still had to unpack, I’ve managed to accommodate all but one box on new bookcases.  I purchased four of the Billy Series from Ikea – good solid shelves that look alright and were cheap to buy.

bookcase 2

I like having a bookcase in the computer room as I can lean over and select a book I think might be of value and check it out on ABE Books. A surprising number of my long ago acquired books are worth quite a lot of money, first editions of Jack Kerouac (bought second hand) for instance are worth up to $200 US.

These days I buy first editions as they are published and recently received four new first edition hardcovers of favourite authors, one signed. They were the new John Crowley novel KA: Dar Oakley in the Ruins of Ymr, Tool of War by Paolo Bacigalupi, The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman and Gnomon by Nick Harkaway.

I’ve read The Book of Dust and Ka so far and loved them both.  Philip Pullman and John Crowley being masters of exquisite prose, are always a joy to read. Both books coincidently feature talking animals. In Philip Pullman’s alternate world each person is born with a Daemon, an animal familiar of some kind or another that represents their soul.

Ka is about a Crow named Dar Oakley, an immortal creature who relates the story of his long life to the unnamed narrator, who dying of some unspecified illness, is living in the end days of this planet, which has been destroyed by humankind’s heedlessness and wastefulness as witnessed over the millennia by Dar Oakley.

Still on the subject of books and animals, last night we went to a Christmas gathering at an old friend’s house. I gave the lady of the house a copy of KA for Christmas, and she gave me a wonderful calendar created by local Melbourne artist Elise Hurst, of whom I had previously never heard.  Flipping through the pictures I was astonished by the inclusion of a picture of a crow…

…a curious coincidence that was repeated when I studied the cover of the calendar more closely and noticed the fox incorporated into the hair of the girl. Shades of KA again, as one of the characters who has the ability to communicate with Dar Oakley is a girl he calls Fox Cap.

The other illustrations in the calendar all have an animal theme, and are heart tuggingly nostalgic.  They are endearingly whimsical and I’m delighted to have discovered the artist. I shall enjoy turning over the pages each month in 2018.

You can purchase a copy of the calendar from the artist’s website. She also has books and prints for sale, which are mighty tempting to buy – gorgeous stuff.

With Christmas day only a week away I wish readers of this blog a happy festive season and many delightful surprises in 2018.

The Melbourne Cup

mounting yard gate
Mounting Yard Gates at Flemington

Don’t ask me who is going to win the Melbourne Cup; I haven’t a clue.

I’ve studied the form guide and read all kind of tips on various websites, and even drawn up a horoscope.

Speaking of the horoscope it was interesting to discover a most unusual planetary pattern at the exact time of the Cup (3.00pm) – a Mystic Rectangle that involves four planets in sextile/trine/opposition relationships in air and fire signs.

mystic rectangleIn this case Saturn is 25° Sagittarius trine (120°) Uranus 25° in Aries and sextile (60°) Venus 29° in Libra.  Venus is trine the Moon in 25° Gemini which is sextile to Uranus in Aries.

Aries and Libra are in opposition as are Sagittarius and Gemini.

So if you were to draw any conclusions from this horoscope regarding the Melbourne Cup winner, you’d probably go for names that have either air and/or fire associations.

Wall of Fire is one, as is Rekindling. Then there’s Libran, Humidor, Max Dynamite, Ventura Storm and Boom Time.

It seems most of the “experts” are predominantly tipping Marmelo, Johannes Vermeer and Humidor.

On the whole I think the Cup field is quite boring and does not include any of my particular favourites, so I doubt I’ll even have a bet on it. That is despite my Online Betting Account being flush with money after I successfully bet on Vengeur Masque in the Geelong Cup, because his name was spot on for the start of Scorpio and I couldn’t resist putting a few dollars on him each way.

Astrology does work sometimes.

Anyway, good luck with finding the winner.

The Stars Align for The Cleaner –Moonee Valley Racing Review

The Cleaner with trainer Mick Burles poses for photos after winning the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes

If you follow astrology, it really wasn’t all that much of a surprise when Tassie cult hero The Cleaner took out the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes for a second time. We are currently under the sign of Virgo, whose attributes include a compulsion to clean up and set things in order.

The Cleaner won in fine fashion just as he did at this time last year, leading from the start to the finish and putting enough of a break on the horses in pursuit that they couldn’t catch him. He won by 1¾ lengths from Bagman with Dibayani two lengths behind running third.

All that happened later in the afternoon, but there were three interesting races before it was scheduled to run.

I arrived at Moonee Valley in time to see Race 4, the Craig Opie Cup, a race over 1600 metres and observed the runners in the parade ring before they went out to the track. The Lloyd Williams stable had two imported Irish stayers in the race and they ran the quinella, the unfancied Chance To  Dance winning narrowly over his stable mate The United States, who started as favourite.

Race 5 was the Atlantic Jewel Stakes for three year old Guineas bound fillies. Of most interest among the contenders were Pasadena Girl, Stay With Me and Jameka.

Stay With Me was the popular favourite, but I fancied Pasadena Girl who was at unusually attractive odds. Stay With Me won by 1½ lengths from Pasadena Girl who stormed from the rear of the field in an eye catching run to just miss out. Jameka ran third. These three fillies were the best of the field and a natural trifecta.

Fell Swoop, the winner of Race 6 was also nominated for a race in Sydney, but his connections opted to run him at Moonee Valley. They made the right choice, for he was a dominant winner of the Listed Cup Club Stakes. He seems to have come from nowhere to be a force to be reckoned with, having 7 wins for 9 starts on his CV.

And so we come to the feature race…

Contributer was the hot favourite, but failed to make any headway in the straight, given every chance. Perhaps he doesn’t take to Moonee Valley. Mourinho seems to have attracted the PB Lawrence Stakes curse, which indicates that the winner of the aforementioned race will not win again in the season.

The next race was as keenly anticipated as the Dato Tan, owing to the resumption of star sprinter Chautauqua contesting it. Another Group 2 competition, the Mitty’s McEwen Stakes is run over 1000 metres and is a speed test, generally run at rattling pace.

Sistonic and I’m All The Talk fought out the lead through most of the race and both finished at the tail of the field. Chautauqua was well back and came wide just past the turn into the straight, sailing past Furnaces who had snatched the lead with Flamberge going with him. It was a sensational win by Chautauqua and a natural trifecta between the first three home. Flamberge finished second and Furnaces hung on for third.

The weather was an improvement on last week, and considerably warmer, so it was a pleasure to be outdoors in the muted sunshine, and the racing had that spring fever edge which only comes with talented horses pitted against other talented horses.

Next week the racing action is at Flemington featuring the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes. Looking at the nominations it appears to be a fascinating race with several more classy horses starting their spring campaign - Fawkner, Alpine Eagle, Mongolian Khan along with Boban and the usual suspects.

Also Petits Filous is nominated for the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes and we’ll all be hoping that she can win it.

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling–Cox Plate Review

race 8 _adelaide 4
Adelaide on his way to the barriers prior to winning the Cox Plate

Though technically only three (his birth date is 19/2/11) Irish colt Adelaide blitzed the Cox Plate field with an astounding run from last position. Starting his move at the 800 metre mark, he raced down the extreme outside to overtake the leaders in the straight and win by a short margin from Fawkner and Silent Achiever, part of a wall of horses hitting the line together.

Just after the corner into the straight – The Cleaner is slightly ahead of Fawkner Adelaide is on the extreme outside just about to pass Silent Achiever & Side Glance (on her inside).

Another wall of horses finish featured in the other Group 1 race over the weekend.

Lankan Rupee finally quashed his Moonee Valley hoodoo and returned to the winner’s circle with a bold front running win in the Manikato Stakes.  It was another exciting photo finish with little separating the first eight runners who crossed the line, strung out across the track.  Angelic Light grabbed second and outsider Famous Seamus was awarded third place.

I’ve been rather jumping the gun, describing the Cox Plate finish…

When I arrived at the track at about 2.30 pm it was just after Race 3 the Group 2 Drummond Golf Fillies Classic. It was won by Lumosty who outclassed the rest of the field winning by 2 lengths from Tahni Dancer and Berimbau.

As there was plenty of time before Race 4, and as is my usual habit, I wandered out to the stalls area to see who had already arrived. I came across The Cleaner in his stall, with a small crowd of people gathered around.

Also nearby were the International contingent, including eventual Cox Plate winner Adelaide. He’s a beautiful looking animal.

It was great to see the 2008 Cox Plate winner Maldivian in attendance, primarily to lead out the Cox Plate field. I managed to get a lovely head shot of him in the stalls area.

The field for Race 4 , the Group 3 Telstra Phonewords Stakes was filing out to the track as I left the stalls area, so I headed to the public lawn at the top end of the straight and easily found a position on the fence to watch the race.

race 4 _bend 1
Race 4 – the corner into the straight, Legends in the background with patrons crowded onto the balconies.

The race was won by the favourite Galaxy Pegasus with Law and Nicoscene filling the minor places. I didn’t have any money on the outcome, feeling disinclined to bet on the race.

Race 5 was the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, a Group 2 race for stayers over 2500 metres. Precedence was my selection as he’d won the race last year and also in 2010. It was a rough race where a big kerfuffle occurred on the corner as they turned into the straight for the second time. A gasp arose from those near where I was standing, as Chad Schofield was thrown from Albonetti after she had clipped heels with another horse. Winning jockey Michelle Payne was suspended for 20 meetings as a result of the incident.  Prince of Penzance was the winner, with Le Roi running second and Au Revoir third. Precedence was galloped on, which stymied his chances. Chad Schofield was well enough to ride his two other commitments of the meeting, and Albonetti was unhurt and galloped riderless to the post.

Down the straight in the Moonee Valley Cup – Au Revoir leads at this point with Le Roi in second place and Prince of Penzance about to overtake them.

It was relatively uncrowded at the top end of the public lawn and the surrounding people were a cheery friendly bunch.

A young spiv exclaimed that he’d never seen a horse close up. We made room for him on the fence and tipped him when the horses were about to thunder past. He was wearing an extraordinary watch; a steam punk monster which he said he bought in America. I took a photograph of it ...

My first and only winner of the day was Hooked in the Crystal Mile. As we are now in the sign of Scorpio his name struck me as quite appropriate for the Astrological season, but he did have good form on his side as well.

There was still 1½ hours to go before the main event, and I will admit time was starting to drag, so I decided to grab a beer and sit for a while and study the form for the 7th race, the Dilmah Exceptional Teas Vase (it used to be called the Aimee Vase). It’s a Group 2 for three year olds run over the same distance as the Cox Plate (2040 metres).

My selection was Atmosphere so I backed him for a win only. He ran second to Moonovermanhattan who I admit I didn’t fancy as I’ve seen him race several times before where he was unsuccessful.

race 7 _moonovermanhattan 1

race 7 _straight 1
The top of the straight in the Vase – Moonovermanhattan leads with Zululand behind him on the inside, Atmosphere (in pink silks & red cap) is running third.

There are those who say the Cox Plate should be run at Flemington, but to my my mind it wouldn’t be the same race. What makes it so special is that it is run on the tight circuit of Moonee Valley, where the atmosphere is electric with anticipation as in an ancient Roman theatre. You have to be there to experience the palpable excitement of the crowd as the race start draws near.

There was plenty of time in hand after the Vase so I returned to the stalls area and came across The Cleaner again, being kitted out for the race. His trainer Mick Burles obligingly posed with his mate “Bill” before leading him out of his stall, so I could get this photo.

Not all the horses had emerged during the time I was near the parade ring, but I didn’t wait for them, as the time for the Cox Plate was drawing near, so I made my way back to the fence at the top of the public lawn, and photographed some of the others as they made their way to the starting gates.

The Cleaner had the outside barrier (14) and had to work hard to get to the lead which he eventually did,  just after passing the winning post for the first time. This may have been his downfall, but that’s his style of racing. The fairy tale ending was not to be, but The Cleaner led the field at a good clip until half way up straight, where he was overtaken first by Fawkner, then half of the rest the field, but he didn’t give up even then, striving hard to finish 9th, three and half lengths from the winner. With a better barrier, he would undoubtedly have finished closer. Anyway he made the race an honest competition of pace and stamina and set it up for Adelaide.

Adelaide is certainly something special, to come from Ireland after  racing in America in August, to win the Cox Plate in such a remarkable fashion. I suppose one should feel privileged to have witnessed the event. Fawkner and Silent Achiever did the locals proud, narrow runners up to an exceptional talent.

A young woman standing close to me was over the moon with his win, as she’d backed him; no doubt because of his name and the associations it had for her.  As good a way to pick a winner as any.

I had a win bet on Fawkner, so no collect for me, so I headed for the bus stop and home, after another great day at the races in splendid sunshine, a cool breeze keeping it pleasant and balmy.

Next weekend is super Saturday at Flemington with four Group 1 races on the program, the feature being the Victoria Derby. It’s going to be a busy week following that, with the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, the Rolling Stones on Wednesday night, the Crown Oaks on Thursday and the Emirates Stakes meeting on Saturday. I’m undecided if I’ll go to all the races; it depends on how I feel after the Stones concert. I may give the Oaks a miss, but will definitely attend the Emirates, where the Darley Classic Sprint looks like an must see  race with Lankan Rupee up against new emerging sprint sensation Chautauqua.
